As far as I can tell, they are just pulling in massive amounts of rss feeds, similar to how 4rss works. I like to view sites like this for inspiration of what can be accomplished with simple syndication.

There are a very large number of very successful and very large sites that are doing the very same thing that 4RSS does. Unlike the other Joomla! extensions that create articles from RSS feeds, 4RSS is built for a very large volume without overloading server. We have 100 sites using 4RSS and we pull in at least 3,000 new articles per day. We have been able to pull in 3,000 new articles in less than 3 minutes on fast servers.
